World Leather Day 2025 – Beyond the Surface
On April 26, we celebrate World Leather Day – a day to celebrate leather as a natural, sustainable and long-lasting material. This year’s theme is ‘Beyond the Surface’, encouraging us to look beyond what we first see – and instead understand the entire value chain behind leather.
A material with deeper meaning
Leather is more than just a luxury material – it is a fine refinement of a by-product from the food industry, making it an important part of the circular bioeconomy. By using leather sustainably, we help reduce waste and maximize resource use.
What does ‘Beyond the Surface’ mean?
Behind every leather product is a work that is imbued with:
Transparency – Modern leather production takes place in tanneries that follow strict environmental standards and social responsibilities.
Certification and responsibility – An increasing number of tanneries are now certified by organizations such as the Leather Working Group or the Sustainable Leather Foundation.
Durability and longevity – Leather is durable, repairable and reusable – making it a smarter and more beautiful choice than synthetics.
Swedish Tanners – Leather for the future
World Leather Day is an initiative of Leather Naturally, a global organization that works to spread knowledge about leather and its role in a more sustainable society. In Sweden, Swedish Tanners represents the four Swedish tanneries that work to develop and highlight Swedish leather production with respect for both people and the environment.
