Foundation for the Promotion of the Tanning Industry
Four companies with production in Sweden make up today’s Swedish tanning industry. An industry, from Svenljunga in the south to Sattajärvi in the north, that refines the residual products of hides and skins from cattle, reindeer, sheep and lambs into a high-quality material with beauty and comfort as well as unique properties in terms of durability and longevity. The art of making leather, skins, sheepskins and reindeer skins is as ancient as man’s ability and desire to use the materials. Still, the harmony between hand, brain and heart is important in today’s quality and environmentally driven businesses.
The purpose of the Foundation is to promote research and development
The purpose of the Foundation for the Promotion of the Tanning Industry is to promote research and development concerning the technology, chemistry and economics of the tanning industry and related issues, as well as to award scholarships to persons wishing to improve their knowledge of tanning in Sweden and abroad. Preference shall be given to persons already active in the Swedish tanning industry or the Swedish leather industry.
In this sense, Swedish designers, researchers and technicians, etc. are an important target group for the Foundation. These professional groups are a prerequisite for Swedish manufacturers of leather, skins, reindeer skins and lamb and sheep furs to be able to meet both current and future demands and requirements for material properties and manufacturing methods. In this context, the Foundation has good experience of many years of cooperation with Ung Svensk Form.
Leather, skins, sheepskins and reindeer skins create products for the future
It is the Foundation’s firm belief that leather, skins, sheepskins and reindeer skins are products for the future and that the path towards new, as yet untested, areas of application and segments can be developed for the renewal of a natural material that communicates sustainability and that we humans have processed, used and appreciated since ancient times.
